What is Virtual Reality?
Informative Speech

As we know, people usually require three things in a marriage. A beautiful wedding must contain a couple, people's blessings, and true love. However, can you imagine your mother and any of your relatives not wanting to attend your wedding ceremony? How sorrowful it would be! Here is an example. A Japanese man named Akihiko Kondo, has married a virtual reality singer, Hatsune Miku. According to his mother, “For Mother, it wasn’t something to celebrate.” But Akihiko Kondo said, “I’m in love with the whole concept of Hatsune”. From his point of view, he was happy; but from his family's point of view, he was unfortunate. People might have a question about how virtual reality works and can it create a "wife" for you? Before we answer this question, we need to understand the definition of virtual reality. The definition of "virtual" is made to appear to exist and almost or very near the thing described. We can defined virtual reality as close-reality as well. ("What Is Virtual Reality?").
Computer programmers who specialize in 3D are able to create virtual reality by entering data into processors. There are two video monitors mounted on customers and the customers can see the pictures made by the computer through equipment including headpieces and glasses that directs customers’ sight into the monitors. Through those two monitors, customers are able to have a sense of depth from the two different views from each of the monitors (Hormann). According to the Virtual Reality Society, “Our entire experience of reality is simply a combination of sensory information and our brains sense-making mechanisms for that information.” Human’s senses are stimulated by using computers to create a virtual environment (Hormann).
After we understand what virtual reality I what do we need to learn next? The advantages and disadvantages of virtual reality. Virtual reality can create a new and better gaming experience for the customers and can enhance different forms of entertainment, including attending musical performances. Virtual reality can decrease the probability of getting an injury when testing a risky skill or a new technology developed by scientists. Virtual reality can be used in education areas to create a more enjoyable, efficient, and advanced learning environment for students. Students could use virtual reality for practicing and doing exercises in subjects sever times to refresh their memory. Virtual reality can be used for healthcare professionals to perform physical examinations and therapy sessions. However, the cost of advanced virtual reality equipment is not affordable for many people. Also, this equipment is specialized so that it is not easy to carry around ("Virtual and Augmented Reality"). And according to Virtual and Augmented Reality, “immersive virtual environments can cause users to experience motion sickness, eye strain, and seizures”. “These issues that divide convincing or enjoyable virtual reality experiences from jarring or unpleasant ones are partly technical and partly conceptual”, according to the Virtual Reality Society ("Virtual and Augmented Reality").
Virtual reality is the creation of a virtual environment by computer and is presented to people's senses in such a way that people could experience the environment as if they are really there. It has both entertainment and serious uses. The technology is becoming well-known and more widespread. In the future, we won't know what areas virtual reality will be used in; we won't know how virtual reality can affect our society; we won't know if virtual reality will change people's ordinary living patterns completely. But “we can expect to see many more innovative uses for the technology in the future and perhaps a fundamental way in which we communicate by using virtual reality”, according to the Virtual Reality Society.

Even the information from this source is not very detailed but it covered many areas I would like to discuss. It roughly talks about the operating principle of VR, and the application of VR in military training, law enforcement training, pursuit driving. I will be able to use this source as my expand knowledge instead of discuss the application only in education and military areas.

I used this source to build up my beginning paragraph. It talks about the news that a Japanese man married with a VR singer and it includes his own idea about his wedding. It is very interesting information about virtual reality.

This resource includes application of virtual reality from Hamilton College and the evaluation from college professor. Students come from various grades and majors shared their own experience of using virtual reality as a study assistant. I will be able to reference the evaluation and their experience to make a fair conclusion about how virtual reality could VR change the future of education system.

I believe the information in this website could help me with my topic in general because it includes very broad knowledge about virtual reality. It has different categories information of virtual reality such as “what is Virtual Reality?” and “when was Virtual Reality invented?” It would inspire me in the future when I am lack of reliable and new ideas.
